Alex Sayf Cummings was born in Charleston, WV, and grew up in Gastonia, NC, before earning a BA at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and a PhD in History at Columbia University. She now serves as an associate professor of History at Georgia State University and a senior editor of the blog Tropics of Meta. Her work has appeared in Al Jazeera, the Brooklyn Rail, the Journal of American History, the Journal of Urban History, Salon, and Southern Cultures, among other publications; the book, Democracy of Sound: Music Piracy and the Remaking of American Copyright in the Twentieth Century, was published by Oxford University Press in 2013, and Brain Magnet: Research Triangle Park and the Idea of the Idea Economy is forthcoming from Columbia University Press. She is also a co-editor of the anthology East of East: The Making of Greater El Monte, forthcoming from Rutgers University Press in February 2020.
