Author Page of Robert T. Deck
The author, who has a Ph.D. in physics from the University of Notre Dame, is currently an Emeritus Professor of Physics at the University of Toledo, from which he received an outstanding teacher award in his fourth year of teaching.
In addition to the two books listed below, he is the author or co-author of over 50 papers published in professional journals.
His immersion in the idyllic university life of an academic was disturbed in 1978 by the arrival of an unwanted dog, who subsequently succeeded, dispute much resistance, in turning the author into a dog lover. Thereafter, there appeared amid the author's lectures in Quantum Theory occasional references to a Dodger McGee, with whom the author claimed to have discussed the details of the theory. It was questions about Dodger McGee from students long after their graduation that partly inspired the author's second book.
The author's first book is a testament to his career long interest in the foundations of Quantum Theory. This book, written meticulously over a period of 30 years, uncovers the essential content of the quantum theory by rigorously deriving its equations from the one essential concept that distinguishes quantum mechanics from classical theory. One who wishes to understand the basis for Quantum Mechanics, and why its equations have the form they have, should read this book.

DEVELOPMENT OF QUANTUM THEORY FROM PHYSICAL PRINCIPLES
Book derives entire content of quantum theory and its formalism on basis of two physical notions: (1) the existence of (unspecified) pairs of "conjugate observables" that do not have exact values simultaneously, and (2) the required form invariance of the equations of physics under transformations between physically equivalent coordinate frames. Author combines the two notions to determine both the known conjugate observables and their properties. Lucid explanation of gauge invariance is used to derive basic interaction terms in equations of motion.
Book includes usual applications of quantum mechanics along with a careful
development of Dirac theory and an explanation of the spin-statistics theorem.
