Agnes Chavez is an interdisciplinary artist and educator. She is the founder and developer of the SUBE, Teach Language thru Art, Music & Games program, founded in 1996. Sube is a Hands-on Language Kit to teach real-world language skills and develop cultural diversity awareness in Kindergarten through 5th Grade classrooms. Her "Sing, Watch, Learn" video won the Kids First! Coalition for Quality Children's Media Endorsement in 2007 and Agnes won the 2012 New Mexico Women in Technology Award for her innovate educational tools and programs.
In 2009 she founded the STEMarts Lab which delivers real world sci-art installations and STEAM programming for schools, art and science organizations, festivals or events. STEMarts applies the latest scientific innovations to education through interdisciplinary and intercultural collaborations. Students learn to harness their creativity and develop 21st century skills around humanitarian and ecological topics of interest. Its mission is to combine art, science and technology to explore real world challenges that inspire and activate our youth leaders.
Chavez has developed art-based curricula and STEAM programs for Scholastic, 516 Arts, Los Alamos National Laboratory and ISEA2012. In her art, Chavez collaborates with science laboratories such as CERN, where she works with data visualization to create participatory experiences that explore our relationship with nature and technology.
