Ms. Gloria Swift immigrated to the United States in 1973 and served in the United States Army where she was the first Black in the all-female Color Guard and earned Distinguished Graduate at the Instructors' Training School. In Law Enforcement, Ms. Swift was the first female police officer on the department. Those were the days when it was difficult for black women to integrate into a white, male-dominated profession. There was drama in and out of the police station. She remembered one incident that still makes her smile. Imagine arresting a driver for being under the influence, and on the first day of trial, he brought the car engine into the courtroom.
In Banking, it was said, "If you want something done, give it to Gloria Swift." She told the story about being robbed while training a teller and getting into an argument with the robber when he accused her of poking holes in his paper bag which caused the money to fall out. Details of this event and other experiences in the workforce were chronicled in 'The True Story of an Illegal Immigrant Who Became a Citizen of the United States.'
Ms. Swift is a retired educator who holds multiple degrees and credentials in Education. 'Thank You, Ms. Swift - It's Not About As and Bs' was written to highlight the challenges teachers face in the classroom.
