Matthew Scherer

Matthew Scherer is an assistant professor at Union College and a research fellow at Georgetown University's Berkley Center for Religion, Politics & World Affairs. He will be an assistant professor of Government and Politics at George Mason University (as of the fall 2013) teaching courses on modern and contemporary political theory. He specializes in secularism, religion and politics, critical theory, political theology, American political thought, and constitutionalism. He previously taught at Johns Hopkins University and the University of California, Berkeley. Scherer's publications include "The Rhetoric of Persuasion: On the Varieties of Political Oratory" (2007), a chapter entitled "Saint John: The Miracle of Secular Reason" to Political Theologies: Public Religions in a Post-Secular World (2006, eds. Hent de Vries and Lawrence E. Sullivan), and the entry of "Secularism" for the forthcoming Encyclopedia of Political Thought.
