David Clarke

David walks, talks and writes all things 1066 and much more.

He is a member of the Outdoor Writers and Photographers Guild and considers that his membership of CAMRA, The Inn Sign Society, The Ramblers and the Long Distance Walkers Association to be a perfect match for walking.

He is the author and creator of 1066 Harold’s Way, the 100 mile long distance walk inspired by King Harold’s epic march to the Battle of Hastings, 1066. The 1st Edition of 1066 Harold’s Way was published in 2013 and a revised and updated 2nd Edition was published in 2018 before the link to Hasting Castle was added to create a Capital to Coast Walk for 2019.

David has also written ‘Walking the High Weald – Three Castles and an Ironmaster’s House’, a series of twelve shorter walks ‘History Walks in 1066 Country’, a guide to Rye, East Sussex -‘Rye in Pictures’ and his latest publication is the ‘Pub Guide to Walking 1066 Harold’s Way’.

Researching all things 1066 fed the imagination and David wrote ‘1066 The Saxon Times’ to review the whole of that tumultuous year, from the consecration of Westminster Abbey to King William hiding in a ‘Nunnery’ in Barking on New Year’s Eve.
