Doug Smith

Doug Smith is a former National Hockey League player who faced a catastrophic, career ending injury at 29 years old. He is an expert on performance, trauma, transition and recovery and translates his story and message into bottom line results for anyone or any organization open to listening. He thrives on working with individuals, teams and leaders, guiding them to higher levels of performance, awareness and recovery from any trauma.

With the same energy and passion he put into mastering sports, Doug opens the minds in his audience by sharing his personal story of overcoming adversity as a young child in leg braces. He explores the extraordinary accomplishment of making it to the NHL by 18 years of age, the inherent trauma of a collision sport, the massive career transition and inspirational recovery from quadriplegia as an adult. Doug, who was paralyzed from the neck down after his accident, has learned to walk again and he relates how he uses the 8 principles himself. By the end of Doug's presentation, the audience will be equipped and empowered to use the 8 performance principles for themselves and others around them.

His customers and audiences have included international societies & associations, private and public companies, university students and faculty, elementary and high schools, health care organizations, rehabilitation firms, sports teams and charities. Since learning how to walk again he has founded a manufacturing company in Ottawa, worked for a decade as an Internet executive and has written three books on transition, recovery and performance. He has provided counselling and a success track to hundreds of accident survivors, business owners, managers and teams of all kind.
