Sue Knaup discovered the magic bicycles can bring to people when she worked as a San Francisco bike messenger in the 1980s. She later opened her own bike shop in Prescott, Arizona, which she ran for 13 years. Finally, she tapped her more than 36 years working for and leading nonprofits to found One Street (www.onestreet.org) where nonprofit and business leaders come together to help people with bicycles.
Her books reflect her conviction that bicycles can indeed save this struggling world of ours. Simply noting the number and diversity of people riding bikes can reveal the health of any community.
Sue also believes in the power of social change through organizations. While some charismatic individuals have managed to cause impressive change in our past, even they had to rely on a backdrop of organized people to bring the change to life. But she also knows all too well how difficult it is to make change through organizations. Humans seem wired to destroy rather than nurture organizations. Her books take this tendency head on, helping guide readers past common organization pitfalls and into effective social change.
