All writers feed off inspiration. For many years, the food of Italy and particularly that of Rome, inspired every book, every article, just about every word I wrote. It was also the impetus behind Flavors of Rome, my travel consulting and small culinary tour company. But there was more: besides the food, there was the history, the art, the Italians themselves, and the singular culture of il bel far niente in the country of my ancestors that pulled me in.
Then there came a moment when something else took my breath away. A little boy named Luke who loved the moon inspired me to write a children’s book. Smack in the middle of writing a memoir/family history inspired by my Sicilian grandparents and a box of faded letters, Luke’s Moon appeared, clearly out of the blue, as an expression of the love I have for my grandson. (Now there’s also a granddaughter waiting for hers.) Inspiration comes in all sizes, genders, and from all parts of the world. You just have to write it.
