Michelle M. Martin

Dr. Michelle M. Martin is a Michigander by birth and a Kansan and Oklahoman by choice. Earning her B.A. and M.A. degrees in history from Western Michigan University, Martin arrived in Kansas in 1997. A history professor, living history interpreter, author and photographer, Martin founded her own historical consulting company--Discovering History--and serves as a historical consultant for the television, film and print industries. Her work has been aired on the History Channel, PBS and the National Geographic Channel. She is a living history interpreter and has volunteered her time at Fort Scott National Historic Site, Fort Larned National Historic Site, Wilson's Creek National Battlefield, Mine Creek Battlefield State Historic Site (Kansas) to name just a few. Her photographs have been featured in magazines and newspapers in the Central Plains. Martin served as the historian and director of the Little House on the Prairie Museum located south of Independence, Kansas. Martin's passion is preserving the rich tapestry of the American historical narrative and sharing it with the public. She was the co-host of Around Kansas, a weekly television show broadcast digitally on YouTube, with her friend and fellow historian Deb Goodrich. When not researching, writing and helping preserve history Martin enjoys storm chasing, photography, traveling to historic sites, hiking, and spending time with her husband Donald Fixico and her cat Josie. While a doctoral student Martin earned numerous fellowships and awards for her research and scholarship. In August 2023 Martin will joined the faculty of the Department of History at Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, the capital of the Cherokee Nation. She is an Assistant Professor of History and the Coordinator of the Public History Certificate program at NSU.
