Paolo Azzone, M.D.

Psychiatrist, Psychotherapist, Psychoanalyst.

Practice

I have been working in the field of mental health for 20 years now. I face everyday patients suffering from a wide range of mental health problems, from neurosis to depression, from personality disorders to psychosis. I have learnt that a thorough understanding of a patient’s emotional history and family and love relations is a perquisite for effectively helping people experiencing deep personal suffering, even when reliance on medication is mandatory. I am experienced in working in individual, family and couple settings and I am aware that my intervention style must adapt and be modelled by the specific and unique patient’s needs.

Research

At the beginnings of my professional life I have been an active member of the research team mentored by Prof. Salvatore Freni, a team responsible for the introduction of psychotherapy research in Italy. Over the last decades I have been focusing more and more on the psychoanalytic theory of depressive disorders. From such investigations did various new ideas stem, which I have now collected my new book Depression as a Psychoanalytic Problem.

Teaching

After an experience as tutor of students for the course in Clinical Psichiatry at the Medical School of the University of Milan, I have been for several years Appointed Professor at the Specialization School in Psychiatry, complementing the course in Psychotherapy.

Since 2012 I have been contributing through supervision activity to the Seminar of Psychoanalysis of Minsk (Belarus).
