Charles R. Scott is an American writer, family adventurer, and endurance athlete. He worked at Intel Corporation for 14 years before deciding to focus his energy full-time on writing, speaking and doing endurance challenges with his family linked to charitable causes.
In the summer of 2009, he and his eight-year old son cycled the length of mainland Japan, 2,500 miles in 67 days. The United Nations named them "Climate Heroes", as they raised money for a tree planting campaign and promoted the UN's efforts to combat climate change. In the summer of 2011, Scott cycled 1,500 miles around Iceland with his ten-year-old son and four-year-old daughter. The following summer, he cycled for 42 days across Western Europe with his children. He has competed in many marathons, Ironman triathlons, and ultra marathons and has served as a guide to blind athletes in these events. He has run nonstop across the Grand Canyon and back -- 46 miles and 11,000 feet of elevation gain -- and cycled for 26 hours straight between New York City and Washington, D.C. in support of an environmental rally.
Scott has spoken at Harvard Business School, Yale School of Management, Going Green East environmental investing conference, at schools, and at many other technology and environmental events. The United Nations featured him as "Expert of the Day" on World Environment Day, June 5, 2012. His essays have been published by CNBC, the Huffington Post, MSN, the United Nations and others. And his adventures have been featured by TV Japan, Parenting Magazine, Kiplinger's Personal Finance Magazine, the Asahi Shimbun and Yomiuri Shimbun newspapers in Japan, the Japan National Tourism Organization, InterFM radio station in Japan, BizMode Magazine in China, the United Nations' Our Planet Magazine, the pan-Arab magazine Al-Bia Wal-Tanmia, Express Newspaper in India, Adventure Cycling Association, and the Icelandic newspaper MBL, among others.
His book about the Japan ride, Rising Son, offers an inspiration to anyone who feels the urge to shake things up and reminds the reader of the most precious gift a parent can give a child: time.
