Kevin McCarey spent considerable time at sea as a merchant marine deck officer, oceanographer and documentary filmmaker. Going to sea and storytelling seem to go hand in hand. Herman Melville, Joseph Conrad, and Eugene O'Neill are the masters, of course. But documentary filmmakers are also good story tellers. You are out in the field for weeks at a time with a small film crew - often in the middle of nowhere (the island of Aunu'u comes to mind) - and so you pass your free time spinning tales. But whenever McCarey would talk about his adventures on cargo ships or as a boat captain in Puerto Rico, someone would inevitably pipe up and say: "You should write a book about that!" So he did. Eventually. Very eventually. Two books, in fact. And another on the way.
