Loretta Smith was born, raised and educated in St. Louis, Missouri but has lived in Washington, D.C. for over 40 years. She attended Harris Teachers College and St. Louis University. She taught in both the St. Louis and DC Public Schools. She is a writer of books for children and adults. For adults, she has written a book about Michael Jordan ("Mr. Jordan Goes to Washington") and a DIY Guide to Wedding Publicity. She has written 6 books for children:

"Sista CindyElla Mae," the African-American re-telling of the Cinderella story,

"The Tale of the Gold Medallion,"

"I Know My Community Workers,"

"My Doll & Me: Superheroes Fighting Bullying with Kindness,"

"10 Acts of Kindness,"

"Superheroes Fight Bullying with Kindness."

She has created a literacy/performing arts project for young children called LIVING STORYBOOK through which she personalizes her books with photos of public school children. Independent readers record the text of the books and music is added when recordings are transferred to CDs to create read-along versions of the books. Children have the opportunity to showcase their acting, dance and vocal talents when musicals are produced based on the books. A local nonprofit organization in the District of Columbia (Do The Write Thing of DC) has adopted her LIVING STORYBOOK program and provides funding for her to implement the program in public schools.

She also edits books of poetry written by middle and high school students. The most recent one is titled, "R.O.Y.A.L. - If These Streets Could Talk."
