Ronald M. Johnson has long been a partner with Abby A. Johnson in the research of historical and cultural topics. Prior to their recent study of Congressional Cemetery, they wrote Propaganda and Aesthetics: The Literary Politics of African-American Magazines in the Twentieth Century (rev. ed., 1991). They have also published essays and presented scholarly papers on African-American literary and historical topics. In 1992, Abby contributed a photographic essay focused on the burial ground to Washington History, journal of The Historical Society of Washington, D.C. Over the following years, that initial effort evolved into a book-length study of the cemetery authored by both Johnsons. In addition to his collaborative work, Ronald has published essays on the history of American education and the rise of community centers. He is a Professor Emeritus of American History at Georgetown University
