Mark H. Phillips

I grew up reading the classics–especially James Bond novels, Greek mythology, and Batman comics. I managed to earn a BA from the University of Illinois and an MA from Northwestern University, both in Philosophy. Once I learned I couldn't be a full time student forever, I became a teacher and currently teach precalculus and political philosphy. I write to retain the small bit of sanity I have left after twenty plus years educating other people's teenagers.

I am a prolific writer of short stories and novels. My high school students particularly enjoy reading The Resqueth Revolution, a horror/science fiction novel. I co-write the Eva Baum mystery series with my wife Charlotte. Our Eva often finds the rules of her trade too confining.

A few years back, I joined a local writing group called The Final Twist. One of their goals is to help writers sharpen their skills and they use an annual short story anthology and writing critique groups to drive home the importance of craft. Thanks to my affiliation with them, I have developed a knack for producing short stories. My tall tales are published in A Box of Texas Chocolates, A Death in Texas, Twisted Tales of Texas Landmarks, Deadly Diversions, and Underground Texas.

I recommend new writers find and join local writing and critique groups. If you live in the Houston, Texas area, come check out The Final Twist. Just don't miss a meeting. They might make you president. My sentence ends December 31, 2012. In 2013 I return to my favorite chair in the back of the room.
