Gary J. F. Spence

A family history of bipolar disorder propelled Gary Spence into a career in mental health. In 2011, at the age of 63, Gary too was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. His memoir 'A Detour of Mind: A Memoir of Bipolar Disorder' weaves his first hand experiences of this episode along with the historical perspectives of both his mother and grandfather. Since graduating as a Registered Psychiatric Nurse Gary gained 40 years experience working in a variety of roles in mental health and community welfare. This included Nurse Education, Mental Health Rehabilitation, and Consumer and Carer Participation.
