David J. Schryver was born and raised in Watertown, New York, a small city just off the east end of Lake Ontario. With degrees from Jefferson Community College, the State University of New York at Oswego and St. Lawrence University, he taught high school mathematics for 33 years at the Edwards-Knox Central School, located between the St. Lawrence Valley and the Adirondack foothills in the extreme northern part of the state. A resident of St. Lawrence County for almost 40 years, he now makes his home on the shores of Lake Ontario in Dexter, New York.
Having a long-time fascination with waterfalls, waterfall hiking became a past-time after his retirement in 2006. The lack of printed material related to waterfalls in his area prompted the creation of the website nnywaterfalls.com. Originally focused on the northwestern Adirondacks, the project soon "took on a mind of its own" and grew to include the entire north country region. From this came a partnership with other waterfall lovers and the book "Waterfalls of New York State" was born.
