Liz Burn was born Elizabeth Hayes. Born in 1949 in London to Irish parents, but grew up in Birr Co. Offaly, Ireland for the first 10 years of her life, then returned to England. Married at the age of 19. By age 21 had given birth to two sons.
Her life was happy, but pretty un-eventful...until her husband decided to buy a dragster for himself in 1973 and go drag racing!
Even though suffering from shyness, Liz was to end up in the hot seat and became only the second woman outside of the USA to race a 200mph Top Fuel Dragster. Between 1974 and 1978 Liz had raced her way to championship status, setting new records and beating the men at their own game!
At the time, Liz kept a diary of her exploits, which then lived in a drawer for 30 years, until one day her eldest son said " mum, what ever happened to your diary? I would love to read it". The result of that question was the published work 'Drag Racing Through The Eyes Of A Woman'.
