Part of The Maurice Series, each of the three books is a Common Core reading and science resource, which promotes a science through children's literature approach to teaching. Dr. Barth has been promoting this style of interdisciplinary teaching for over 25 years, culminating in The Maurice Series; he continues to write the next book for the series to further his goal of providing educators with effective educational resources for an interdisciplinary curriculum while fulfilling his love for writing and teaching science.

A telescope owner and active astronomer for over 40 years, Dr. Barth is a Reagan Scholar, a former Research Corporation Fellow, and winner of the prestigious Amgen Award for Excellence in Science Teaching, as well as the Science is for Kids Fellowship. Dr. Barth believes that science is a verb, and that every student should have access to an exciting, hands-on science education. Apart from his work as a writer, Dr. Barth is also Associate Professor of Astronomy at Mt. San Jacinto College and he introduces hundreds of students of all ages to the joys of observational astronomy each year. In his spare time, Dr. Barth enjoys gardening, wood carving, raising Akitas, and searching the skies with his own telescopes and binoculars.
