David R. Martin was born in Toledo, Ohio. He spent his childhood and adolescence in Texas, Puerto Rico, Connecticut and Massachusetts.
Mr. Martin's first language was Spanish (which he would return to in a major way during law school). He then learned Southern slang in Texas, British English during one of his dad's summer sabbaticals in London, and Spanglish while attending high school on a U.S. Army base in Ft. Buchanan, Puerto Rico.
To earn money as a teenager, he delivered The San Juan Star and El Nuevo Dia newspapers. He played American football during high school in Puerto Rico and later at Choate Rosemary Hall in Wallingford, Connecticut. After high school, he attended Amherst College where he played junior varsity football and rowed crew.
He wrote for the Amherst Student newspaper and took a variety of courses in literature, history, economics and other subjects. He won a writing prize for an original English essay from the Amherst College English Department his senior year.
Mr. Martin went on to law school at the University of Puerto Rico and New York University. When not writing, he practices corporate law in Atlanta, Georgia. He has a son who lives in Montreal, Canada.
As much as possible, Mr. Martin spends his free time with people he likes and travels.
