Kathy Kenny

Kathy Saade Kenny is a writer and activist who traces her family origins to Bethlehem, Palestine and Mexico.

Katrina in Five Worlds/Katrina en Cinco Mundos is the bilingual biography of her Palestinian grandmother, Katrina Sa’ade. Drawing upon family records, taped interviews and long-lost letters, this dramatic emigrant women’s tale explores the historical and social events that thrust young Katrina into far-flung places, including Northern Mexico during the Revolution, and across social divides in the first half of the 20th century.

Kathy has been a champion of the Palestinian cause for more than 20 years. In the 1990's, she founded a chapter of Women in Black, which held a weekly vigil in San Francisco to call for an end to the Israeli occupation of the West Bank and Gaza.

From 2007 to 2009, Kathy served as president of the Arab Film Festival in San Francisco, whose mission is to enhance public understanding of Arab culture and to provide alternative representations of Arabs that contradict the stereotypical images in the American mass media.

Kathy has also co-written a movie screenplay based on Katrina's life story. She divides her time between Oakland, CA and Mexico, and is a citizen of both countries.

Katrina In Five Worlds/Katrina en Cinco Mundos will interest students, scholars, history buffs as well as descendants of immigrants whose own family stories deserve to be collected before they disappear.
