John Dolan studied at San Francisco State University and the University of Maryland, moving in 1992 to Laboratoire d'Océanographie de Villefranche-sur-Mer, where he is a research scientist and director of research. His interest are the microscopic planktonic forms - in particular a group of bell shaped organisms aptly named Tintinnids - although if you view them the other way up the have an uncanny resemblance to very elegant champagne flute glasses. Such microscopic organisms are the first links in the food chain of the oceans and are excellent models to study biodiversity.
John considers himself quite lucky to get paid for looking at microscopic sea life and sees the value of images of microscopic plankton as a means of making ocean science, and science in general, accessible. You will find the website - Aquaparadox - a virtual Aladdin's cave of glittering and bizarre images.
