Liz Brownlee

Hello and welcome! I'm an award-winning shape poem making poet, shortlisted for the CLiPPA poetry prize in 2022. I love writing animal poems, and enjoy animating my poems, too! You can see them on my YouTube channel. You can also hire me on Zoom to give fun and inspiring workshops/talks on the subjects in my seven books!

5 Stars ‘Shaping the World, 40 historical Heroes in Verse’ -A wonderful book of shape poetry, particularly good for KS2 and KS3. Very carefully worded and shaped, with an information page about each featured person from history or current times. A treasure of a book! ~Fiona Halliday

5 Stars ‘Being Me, Poems about Thoughts Worries and Feelings’ -Written by three very accomplished poets. The poems cover a whole range of thoughts, worries and feelings, from kindness to illness, feeling safe to family dis-harmony and more. There is so much here for any child or adult to dip into. Perfect for home or the classroom, and an excellent resource for PSHE or P4C lessons. Many of these poems will strike a chord with young readers and some will stay with you long after you've finished reading. ~JS

5 Stars ‘Reaching the Stars, Poems about Extraordinary Women and Girls’ - A collection packed with wonderfully diverse poems about some of the countless brave women who shaped history and much, much more. Many of the poems are introduced with background information that could easily be used to plan a whole lesson. ~ Suepoet/Teacher

5 Stars ‘The Same Inside’ - When the world sometimes appears grey and lifeless and blackened by anger, fear and hate, these poems will bring hope, light and life to try to make sense of the wonderful world that we live in and of the equally wonderful variety of people whom we share our wonderful world with. Rich in empathy and emotion that will make you think, make you laugh, make you smile and make you feel the whole range of emotions, The Same Inside would make a worthy and valuable addition to every classroom and school. ~ReaderTeacher

5 Stars ‘Animal Magic’ - Truly Magical - Liz Brownlee has astonishing empathy for the animal world. She doesn’t just observe, she inhabits her subjects. She cares deeply about animals and makes us care by homing on the essential character of each species. Diversity is more than the mere shuffling of DNA. We share her fascination with the results of that process. The fine-tuning of the animate to its surroundings produces delightful quirks of design; each one individual, precious and irreplaceable. She expresses all of this in language which is exquisite, poignant and frequently witty. It can be read by children and adults with equal enjoyment. I can’t think of a better way to educate children about wildlife and conservation. ~Ana, Amazon

Performance Reviews:

"The children were totally engaged right from the off, reading Liz’s brilliant poems and observing the clever animations; she even wrote a personal poem for the children about Chinchillas which is the name of our class. The resources she brought with her were engaging too and the children were able to interact with them – the puppets and the magnetic words.

The children were then inspired to write their own poems about rainforest animals which were fantastic, they were very proud of them. During the workshop, Liz was supporting the children and offering ideas and was warm and encouraging at all times. Throughout the creative writing process the children were encouraged by Liz to read out their poems which they loved. I would definitely recommend visits from Liz Brownlee." ~Zoe Abbott, Stanton Drew Primary School

"Liz Brownlee made a very successful contribution to the Exeter Poetry Festival, leading a day-long family drop-in event at Exeter Central Library. Participants described it as both ‘fun’ and ‘inspirational’, and there was a steady flow of business through the day. We’d certainly use Liz again - the set-up is imaginative and involving and Liz has a lovely, sympathetic touch with children (and parents)." ~Alasdair Paterson, Chair, Exeter Poetry Festival
