Author Biography
Pete Weiland was born July 27, 1933 in Cranford, New Jersey. He attended the local high school where he excelled at scholarship, sports and student govrnment. He matriculated to Princeton University and was enrolled in the Regular NROTC program. On graduation he was awarded the Bachelor of Sciece (Engineering) degree and was commissioned as an Ensign in the United States Navy. Pete was accepted into the Navy flight program in Pensacola, Florida and, later, Corpus Christi, Texas where he learned to fly the AD Skyraider, a single engine, propeller driven carrier based attack plane. He was assigned to Carrier Airborn Early Warning Squadron Twelve at Quonset Point, Rhode Island. He deployed in 1958 and 1959 aboard the USS Intrepid on cruises to the North Atlantic, Caribbean and Mediterranean Seas. On leaving the Navy Pete married the former Mary Rose McAlenney and enrolled in the Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration from which he graduated in 1963. Pete then joined the accounting and auditing firm of Price Waterhouse and was promoted to partner in 1973. His responsibilities included working with many of the largest, most highly respected companies in the United States and Europe.
Pete and Mary Rose have raised three fine sons and now have seven grandchildren. On retirement from Price Waterhouse Pete and Mary Rose moved to the Cherry Valley Country Club community just outside of Princeton, New Jersey, where he was the first President, for nine years, of the Homeowners Asssociation. Today, Pete is a fit 78 years old and he keeps busy reading, working out at the gym, golfing, fly fishing and volunteering on the USS Intrepid Sea Air and Space Museum in New York City.
Purpose
To acquaint children with U.S.Navy aircraft carrier operations and, especially, the skill required by the pilots who take off from and land on them.
