Joel has been writing stories since he was young, creating his own comic strips and short stories. In August 2003, he wrote and self-published Gathering Over Jerusalem through Xulon Press. As part of his doctorate program in 2007, he wrote Leadership Paradigms in Chaplaincy, published at Dissertation.com and the number two best seller for a year. He wrote and illustrated Gnome Family Tales--a new home in December 2008. Aliens, God and the Bible was published by Schiffer Press in 2017 and has enjoyed steady sales. When out shooting black powder rifles with his son, Josh, they started talking about Civil War sharpshooters. Joel studied the subject and got the idea to write about these unusual people; and thus was born The Squirrel Hunters. But an editor told him that although she loved the story, the title was not catchy enough. After much thought and trial-and-error, he came up with the idea--Death is a Sharpshooter. From this beginning came the sequel Death is a Vengeance, then Death is a Gambler, Death is a Grizzly, and finally Death is a Gunfighter (in production).

Three long and complex fantasy stories--based on the story of King David in the Bible--were written before Aliens, God and the Bible. They will be published next in 2021.
