JoNina Abron-Ervin

JoNina Abron-Ervin is a veteran social justice activist, an author, and a journalist. She was a member of the Black Panther Party for nearly a decade and was the last editor of the Black Panther newspaper. A news correspondent at the 2001 U.N. World Conference Against Racism, JoNina was formerly the managing editor of Black Scholar magazine.

From 2000-2003, she led a campaign to stop African-American men from being stripped naked while in jail in Kalamazoo, Mich. From 2007 to 2009, she coordinated publicity for a campaign to stop the mistreatment of youth held at a juvenile detention center near Nashville, Tenn.

JoNina is a retired Western Michigan University associate professor of communication. Her essays about the Black Power period in the United States have appeared in such books as Voices from the Underground: Insider Histories of the Vietnam Era Underground Press, Part 2, and The Black Panther Party [Reconsidered].
