Sheila Crosby (http://sheilacrosby.com) lives on the island of La Palma in the Canaries. She worked for the Royal Greenwich Observatory, but in 2011 she retrained as a Starlight Guide - a tour guide specialising in astronomy - showing visitors around the same telescopes.
In 2021 she learned that the "muscle spasm" in her thigh was a sarcoma – cancer – just before the volcano erupted. Yes, that La Palma. The cancer is in remission, but the doctors couldn't save her leg. She's adapting, and writing a memoir.
She has published three books:
- "A Breathtaking Window on the Universe": a guide to the astronomical observatory on La Palma for normal people, with photos and anecdotes. See a panorama of the observatory at https://tinyurl.com/yxses8n6
- "The Seer's Stone": children's stories set on La Palma, mostly during historical events like the solar eclipse of 1959.
- "The Dodo Dragon and other stories": an anthology of quirky SF (ebook).
Sheila's next release will be "Murder by Starlight" a thriller set in the observatory.
