Enrico Downer was born in Barbados. It is notable that at the time, Barbados was a British colony known as ‘Little England’ partly due to the topographic similarities but mainly because it was one of the earliest English settlements from 1627 and a British colony until its independence in 1966,
He attended multiple institutions of learning that began at St. Stephen's Boys' School on the island continuing to the Univ. of Wisconsin (UWI) and the Univ. of Puerto Rico as an awardee of a full ICA scholarship.
His first job was with the Barbados Advocate, the island's premier newspaper at the time. After immigrating to the US, he served as International Correspondent with Airco International, a medical diagnostic manufacturer in Madison.
From early as an English major, he set about to explore the mystery and magic of literary expression, later finding his niche in fiction writing with historical themes.
His writings are steeped in historical fiction and drawn from his upbringing in Barbados. It is the genre he favors with its potential for the sprinkling of bitter and sweet truths gleaned from his own life growing up in a colonial society. And later branching out to a world of contrasting cultures.
