Robert T Cochran

Serving as the co-director of the Pain Center at Centennial Hospital in Nashville, Tennessee in the 1990s, Robert T. Cochran, Jr., M.D. built his reputation as a leader in chronic pain management. Treating thousands of pain patients throughout his many years of practice has enabled him to explore the commonality of all chronic pain sufferers. Dr. Cochran is now considered an expert on the subject of chronic pain and psychiatric comorbidities.

He has written three groundbreaking books related to pain, culminating with The Opiate Cure, Pain, and The Bipolar Spectrum (2011), which explores the surprising cure of a number of disorders, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), narcolepsy, attention deficit disorder (ADD), bipolar (manic depressive) disorder, chronic depression, and even multiple personality disorders with opiate therapy (opioid treatment). In his own words, Dr. Cochran states, "In The Opiate Cure, Pain and the Bipolar Spectrum, I explore the emerging concept of the bipolar spectrum, that is, the link between bipolar disorder and diseases such as narcolepsy, attention deficit disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. I also present the increasing recognition that the bipolar spectrum is closely linked with chronic pain in its many forms, including migraine."

The Opiate Cure builds on the foundation from his first book, Understanding Chronic Pain, A Doctor Talks to His Patients (2004), which explores the connection between acute/chronic pain, depression, childhood abuse, substance abuse, and bipolar disorder. His second book, Curing Chronic Pain, Stories of Hope and Healing (2009), demonstrates the advancements Cochran has made in successfully treating patients suffering from pain. In this work, he introduces his readers to the positive effect of opiates, given for pain, but often miraculously effective in the treatment of the many psychiatric disorders which accompany chronic pain. Presented in a conversational, informal style, this book examines the specific experiences of chronic pain patients under Cochran's care and supervision. Readers of Cochran's books have been struck by the doctor's warmth, compassion, intellect, and willingness to confront the complicated issues surrounding treatment.

Dr. Cochran is an established specialist in internal medicine, neurology, psychiatric and chronic pain management. He recently retired and closed his practice in Nashville, Tennessee. He still actively studies chronic pain and the use of opioids to treat numerous psychiatric disorders.
