I always wanted to be an archaeologist and much to my surprise, I became one. I've excavated and surveyed in Florida, Georgia, Colorado, New Mexico, and (first, but only as a student) France.
I've been drawn to problems that I thought were ignored. Environmental degradation through human use. Figuring out process through simulation. New ways to estimate population size and agricultural production. Our huge problem with climate change. And quite a lot recently, how, why, where, and when people began working hard to elevate their wealth and status, and how inventiveness and work have grown our economies over the last ten thousand years.
Now semi-retired I have time to explore really great places, and monumental intellectual achievements: L'Anse aux Meadows; Ales Stenar; Chaco and Cahokia; Marx's Capital; Moby Dick. Stay tuned for my take on the prehistory of economic inequality, in book form, coming soon…
