Kathy Park

Kathy Park (1951) is an accomplished sculptor and painter as well as a writer, English professor, gardener, and former Aikido teacher. Her first book, Seeing Into Stone: A Sculptor's Journey (2011), is a memoir about her 15 year apprenticeship with Gordon Newell, a stone sculptor. Most of the memoir takes place in Darwin, California, a tiny ghost town in the Mojave Desert near Death Valley. In 2015, Kathy published Coyote Points the Way: Borderland Stories and Plays, a compilation of short fiction, nonfiction and ten-minute plays. Kathy's most recent book Aikido Off the Mat: One Woman's Journey using Aikido Principles to Stay Sane in Body, Mind, and Spirit is a hybrid memoir that describes what the author has learned from over forty years of practicing Aikido that directly applies to living in a balanced and purposeful way. It was released August 2018 through North Atlantic Books in partnership with Penguin/Random House. Kathy is working on a new book of prose, poetry and her adventures using Aikido to deal with glioblastoma.

Kathy earned an MFA in creative writing through Lesley University in Cambridge, MA and teaches English and creative writing through Adams State University's Prison College Program. Her courses include The Prison Memoir, Communication Arts, Creative Nonfiction, and Introduction to Creative Writing. Kathy lives with her artist husband Henry Woolbert in the San Luis Valley of Colorado.
