Claire Gallien

Claire Gallien has lectured in France at the University of Montpellier 3 in English Studies since 2011 and has received her Professor Habilitation from the sections of English, CompLit, Arabic and Islamic Studies from the University of Sorbonne Nouvelle in 2023.

She has developped research expertise in the fields of early modern British orientalism, with a focus on the constitution of Islamic manuscript libraries in early-modern Britain, postcolonial and decolonial literatures and theories, translation studies, Arabic studies, as well as Islamic epistemology, theology, and Sufism.

Her research has been supported by various international institutions including the CNRS, Columbia University, Oxford University, Tübingen University, and Cambridge University. She was awarded the Edward W. Said Fellowship in 2017 and the Bahari Fellowship (Bodleian Library) in 2022 for her research on early modern collections of Islamic literature.

Her work has been published in distinguished international journals and academic presses. She has lately co-edited Islam and New Directions in World Literature (Edinburgh UP). Her forthcoming book with Oxford University Press is titled Reconfiguring and Appropriating Arabic, Persian, and Indic Literary Traditions in Seventeenth- and Eighteenth-Century Britain. Recreating the Islamicate Canon and she is preparing a monograph on the theological underpinnings of the classification of the sciences genre in Islam and epistemic holism in the seventeenth- and eighteenth-century Islamic world.
