Publishers Weekly wrote about Suslov's first novel:
“Suslov... writes a haunting, devastating novel of Russia, a surrealistic vision of a land beset. A highly symbolic tale, Loosestrife City blends myth with reality as it presents a cruel, grisly, episodic story. It is in a way an updated version of the Dance of Death, of the Last Judgment, of a world filled with Woe, Fear, and Misfortune.... What makes Suslov's tale arresting is the way he takes his mythical figures , these personifications of evil, and illustrates their death-dealing doings with details of everyday life in Bosch-like fashion. , the way he showers ordinary people leading ordinary Soviet lives with cloudbursts of grisly , terrifying experiences. It is Soviet realism informed and molded by Suslov's bitter, frightening imagination that makes this short experimental both a deadly political statement and a malign magic carpet ride.”
