Dan Gutstein was born in Cleveland, Ohio, around the time the Cuyahoga River caught fire, but he hasn't let that deter him too much in life. All four of his grandparents emigrated to this country in steerage, and his parents later forced him to write proper sentences every Friday night before he could go out with his friends. He's proud to say that he is a writer of proper and improper sentences alike.
He is the author of non/fiction (stories, Edge Books, 2010), Bloodcoal & Honey (poems, Washington Writers' Publishing House, 2011), and Buildings Without Murders (novel, Atmosphere Press, 2020). Another book of poems, Metacarpalism, is forthcoming from Unsolicited Press in 2022. His writing has appeared in more than 100 publications, including Ploughshares, Prairie Schooner, American Scholar, The Iowa Review, TriQuarterly,The Penguin Book of the Sonnet, and Best American Poetry.
In addition to writing activities, Dan is co-producer of the forthcoming documentary film Li'l Liza Jane: A Movie About A Song, and is vocalist for punk-jazz band Joy on Fire. Please visit https://www.dangutstein.com/ for more information.
