I was born and raised in Savannah, Georgia, and now reside on Daniel Island in Charleston, South Carolina. From an early age, I had a desire to write and paint and have written books on a variety of subjects ranging from humorous books about old age and aging; humorous books about Dogs; a humorous book on Frequent Flying, and two(2) historical books on the Gullah and Geechee culture of South Carolina and Georgia. Each book is illustrated with my original art.
Creativity is in my blood. My great uncle was famed Savannah, Georgia-born songwriter, Johnny Mercer, who wrote over 1,500 songs from the 1930's through the 1960's and was nominated 19 times for an Academy Award. He then went on to win 4 Academy Awards for "Best Song". These included.....Moon River...Days of Wine and Roses...In the Cool, Cool, Cool of the evening...and...On the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe. He was also an accomplished weekend painter and encouraged me to paint.
In addition to writing, I'm an accomplished photographer and self-taught artist who uses bright primary colors, pen and ink and mixed media to depict the Gullah and Geechee people in peaceful times gone by fishing, shrimping, crabbing, gathering oysters, and living off the land on the sea islands of South Carolina and Georgia.
My books and art have been featured in many local and regional publications including South Carolina Magazine; Low Country Monthly; Hilton Head Monthly; Beaufort Gazette; The Island Packet; Bluffton Today; and the Savannah Morning News. All of my books are available from Amazon.com.
"I hope that my art and photography bring attention to all of the natural beauty of the low country and gives a sense of what life has been like here for many generations. Too often we take these things for granted rather than doing all we can to preserve them for future generations.
