The descendant of two California pioneers, Joseph B. Chiles and Justinian Caire, Frederic [Rick] Chiles was educated in San Francisco, Santa Clara and Santa Barbara. He has a Ph.D. in history from the University of California at Santa Barbara. In 1976, he moved to London and took up a career in marketing communications, founding the agency Positive Image Ltd., as its Managing Director. Having retired in 2007, Rick was able to devote his time to the writing of the history of his great-grandfather, Justinian Caire, published in 2011. 'Justinian Caire and Santa Cruz Island' was followed by a history of all 8 California Channel islands for the Univ. of Oklahoma Press, 'California's Channel Islands', published in 2015. Chiles then turned his attention to his paternal family and published 'Forgotten Trailblazer - Joseph B. Chiles and the Making of California' in 2018. He has recently completed a personal memoir.
