David Barrish
My name is David Barrish, and I am Dean of the School of Business at J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College in Richmond, Virginia, United States of America. You can view my Curriculum vitae at http://www.reynolds.edu/contacts/directory/dbarrish.aspx
I was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, and over the course of my education and business career I have lived in Columbus and Cincinnati (OH), Palm Beach (FL), Williamsburg and Lynchburg (VA). For the past 30+ years I have resided in Midlothian, Virginia with my wife Sydney.
I began working at J. Sargeant Reynolds in 1987, and taught hospitality management for 20 years. As a former hotel manager and controller, I was well-poised to teach a variety of business, accounting and management courses. Additionally, as a former restaurant and foodservice manager I possessed the content knowledge to instruct food and beverage management courses. I pioneered Reynolds' distance learning programs, having developed more than 11 online hospitality management courses.
At present I do not teach, however my hope is to return to the classroom to temper my administrative workload with current experiences within the teaching/learning realm.
I am available as a business consultant on a selective basis. My clients have used my services for concept development, revenue/income enhancement and operational improvement. Contact me at hospitalityprofit@comcast.net for serious inquiries only.
When I am not working as a dean, author or consultant, I can be found in my yard, moving stones, pruning beds or walking behind a lawnmower. During the week I always find time to share affection and play with my Cairn Terrier and my daughter's tabby/Maine Coon cat. I express my artistic side playing the drums to a variety of music from the 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s. I love the grooves laid down by Motown's Funk Brothers and continue to hone my chops playing along with jazz and fusion instrumentals. Finally, as a means of maintaining the connection with my former profession, I cook a weekly multicourse dinner to enjoy by candlelight with my wife, Sydney. She keeps me grounded, and reminds me when to power off the laptop and smell the proverbial roses.
