Steffan Igor Ayora Díaz

Steffan Igor Ayora-Diaz (b. 1956) is an anthropologist (PhD from McGill, 1993) who has conducted research among Sardinian shepherds, among healers in the state of Chiapas, Mexico, and among restaurateurs, professional and domestic cooks in Yucatán. He is Full professor of Anthropology at the Autonomous University of Yucatán, and was President of the Society for Latin American and Caribbean Anthropology (2011-2014), a section of the American Anthropological Association. After completing a team project on technology and its effects on everyday cooking, musical practices and in community instruction through digital media, he co-authored the book Cocina, Música y Comunicación along with Gabriela Vargas-Cetina and Francisco Fernández Repetto (2016). Now he is developing a project on how domestic and professional cooks negotiate between innovation and preservation of gastronomic traditions in Yucatán and Andalucía.
