Rita Bogna was born in Adelaide, South Australia, and has lived there all her life.
She has a Bachelor of Laws (Honours) and Master of Laws from the University of Adelaide and a Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice from the University of South Australia. She was admitted as a solicitor and barrister of the Supreme Court of South Australia in 1983, and of the High Court of Australia in 1985.
Rita worked as a Judge's Associate at the Supreme Court of South Australia before joining the Office of Parliamentary Counsel (South Australian Attorney-General's Department) in 1987. She worked there for nearly 36 years, and from 2004 to 2023 she held the position of Senior Assistant Parliamentary Counsel.
Rita has had a life-long interest in history. In 2021 her essay on the Spanish influenza pandemic in South Australia received a commendation from the judges of the Wakefield Press South Australian History Essay Prize. That essay was developed into the book 'Under Siege: The Spanish Flu in South Australia 1919-1920' which will be published and launched in June 2023.
Rita's next book, 'Last Rites: The Funeral Industry in South Australia since 1836' is already under development, and she is also planning a reference text on the law of burial and cremation in South Australia, a subject on which she is a recognised expert, having been responsible for the drafting of legislation on that subject for many years.
