Michael Gerard Gunzenhauser

Michael G. Gunzenhauser is Professor and Senior Associate Dean in the School of Education at the University of Pittsburgh. He is a philosopher of education and qualitative research methodologist who studies ethics and epistemology as they relate to equity and justice in education and educational research. His 2025 book with Osly J. Flores and Michael W. Quigley, Race-Conscious Caring in Educational Leadership: A Narrative Ethics (Teachers College Press), presents a new leadership ethics to respond to current challenges. His 2012 book, The Active/Ethical Professional: A Framework for Responsible Educators (Continuum Press), is a study of how high-stakes accountability policy affects philosophies of education. He has published numerous articles in leading education journals and chapters in edited books and was a contributing editor to the ASHE Reader on Economics and Finance in Higher Education. He has PhD and BA degrees from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a master’s degree from the University of Vermont.
