John Wheatley

John Wheatley has spent a lifetime turning landscapes into stories.

Growing up in Middleton near Manchester and educated at Leeds University, John worked as a teacher across the north of England absorbing the rhythms of different communities, different lives, and different histories. That deep sense of place has always been at the heart of his writing.

His early novels drew on the rugged coastline and quiet communities of Anglesey, North Wales most recently The Exile's Daughter, a sweeping historical novel set against the First World War, tracing the intertwined lives of a young Polish exile, a Welsh coastal community, and the war that changed everything.

Six novels followed set in his hometown of Middleton, before John turned his attention to West Yorkshire, where he now lives. His latest works The Gallery and The House on Lady Hall Lane mark an exciting new direction into crime fiction, introducing Detective Nula Ryan in the first of a trilogy.

"Whatever the story, or the period," says John, "the landscape is always an essential part of my writing. Town or countryside, I love trying to create a sense of place and local identity."
