Christon currently works as a Consulting Microbiologist in Cincinnati, Ohio, plus is affiliated with the Faculty of Engineering, Universidad del Valle, Ciudad Universitaria Meléndez, in Santiago de Cali, Valle, Colombia, where he holds a life-time appointment as Visiting Professor awarded in 1996.
He previously has taught intensive undergraduate, graduate and professional level courses in several Latin American countries. Those courses were: Engineering and Public Health at the Meléndez and San Fernando campuses of the Universidad del Valle in Santiago de Cali, Colombia; Engineering at the Universidad del Norte in Barranquilla, Colombia; Engineering at the Universidad del Magdalena in Santa Marta, Colombia; Biology at the Universidad del Zulia in Maracaibo, Venezuela; and participated in teaching Virology at the Universidad de Costa Rica in San Juan, Costa Rica.
His scientific honors have included the following: a Senior Scientist and two Senior Specialist awards from the Colombian and American Fulbright Commissions; an International Professorship for Latin America award from the American Society for Microbiology; an instructional award from the Institución para la Conservación de Lago Maracaibo, Venezuela; plus an instructional award from the Universidad de Costa Rica. He has been awarded fellowship in both the American Academy of Microbiology and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
He was the founding Editor-in-Chief for Manual of Environmental Microbiology. He was the founding Series Editor for Advances in Environmental Microbiology.
His hobbies include creating sculpture in ceramic by the use of modeling techniques. He served as a sailing instructor for the American Red Cross from 1994-1996. He was a professional ballroom dancer from 2007-2019 and taught ballroom dance for that time period.
