(Computer scientist) Wei Xu

Dr. Wei Xu is a mathematician, artist and computer scientist. Currently he teaches video game programming/production, 3D math and life drawing at Art Institute of California - San Diego. Also, he is an adjunct faculty at several other universities including University of California San Diego Extension and Zhejiang University (China).

Dr. Xu invented Angle-Based Constructive (ABC) drawing method based on his research on bringing math and modern computer graphics to the observational drawing (or realistic drawing). Unlike Perspective Theory that uses 3D forms to draw shapes on paper, ABC method takes a different but direct approach to manipulate 2D shapes. It makes drawing much faster and more efficient. In his book "Drawing in the Digital Age", Dr. Xu presented a set of 2D shape theories to help artists observe and draw graphics structures scientifically instead of using "feelings". The Chinese version of this book was translated by Dr. Xu himself and published in China in Jan 2014.

Since its release in 2011, the ABC drawing method has been presented at numerous universities and international art conferences including Comic-Con 2012, 2013 and NAEA 2014.
