Thomas Pradeu

Thomas PRADEU is a permanent CNRS Senior Researcher in Philosophy of Science at the University of Bordeaux (France), in the immunology lab (ImmunoConcept), and associated member of the Institute for History and Philosophy of Science and Technology in Paris (IHPST). From 2008 to 2014, he was Associate Professor at the Philosophy Department of Paris-Sorbonne University (France). His areas of specialization are philosophy of biology, and conceptual and theoretical biology, especially in immunology. He was trained in general philosophy, philosophy of science, and biology, at the Ecole normale superieure of Paris, Paris 1 Pantheon-Sorbonne University and Harvard University. He is a former PhD student of Jean Gayon. He collaborates actively with biologists and medical doctors, and publishes regularly in scientific and medical journals (including PNAS, Lancet, Nature Reviews Immunology, Trends in Immunology). His book, The Limits of the Self: Immunology and Biological Identity (Oxford University Press), in which he tries to articulate new ideas about what the immune system is and how it works, received the 2015 Lakatos Award from the London School of Economics for an outstanding contribution to philosophy of science.
