Barbara Ann Bushman

Barbara A. Bushman, PhD, FASCM, is an emeritus faculty at Missouri State University. She has been a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) since 1999. She holds four certifications from ACSM: Program Director, Clinical Exercise Physiologist, Exercise Physiologist, and Personal Trainer. She received her PhD in exercise physiology from the University of Toledo and her BS in health sciences from Grand Valley State University. She taught at Missouri State University for 27 years, retiring at the rank of Professor. She has teaching experience in the areas of exercise testing and prescription, anatomy, physiology, and exercise physiology.

Bushman served as senior editor of ACSM’s Resources for the Personal Trainer, Fourth Edition, and a reviewer for ACSM's Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, Women & Health, and ACSM’s Health & Fitness Journal. As an associate editor of ACSM’s Health & Fitness Journal, Bushman writes the “Wouldn’t You Like to Know” column, which covers a variety of topics in health and fitness. Bushman was the lead author of Action Plan for Menopause, editor of both the first and second edition of ACSM'S Complete Guide to Fitness & Health, as well as numerous research articles.

Since retiring, she has continued to remain active in the field, with editing and authoring several chapters in the new 8th edition of the Fitness Professional's Handbook. Having used prior editions of this textbook for over 20 years while teaching, she also updated the instructor materials related to this new edition - including an instructor guide (with sample syllabus, course outline, lab report data sheets with corresponding grading sheets, and checklists for evaluating lab skills), test package, and presentation package (with over 800 PowerPoint slides).
