All my adult life an activist, since childhood I dreamed of publishing books. Finally, after publishing numerous articles in journals and chapters in other people's books, my first book, Umkhonto we Sizwe (Spear of the Nation), was published two years ago. Currently I am a senior lecturer in Development Studies at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University in Port Elizabeth,on the South Coast of South Africa. I have worked in the past as a researcher for the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission, the Human Science Research Council (Democracy and Governance Programme) and the Institute for Democracy in South Africa (IDASA), and as a lecturer at Rhodes University Politics Department. I have also been involved in activist training and research for the International Center on Nonviolent Conflict (based in Washington DC) and the Centre for Applied Nonviolent Action and Strategy (based in Belgrade, Serbia). Current action research projects include working with the Amabutho of Nelson Mandela Bay as part of the Legacies of Apartheid Wars project (based at Rhodes University)and with the Eastern Cape Department of Human Settlements in the Sustainable Settlement Pilot Project at Seaview in Nelson Mandela Bay.
