A. Yavuz Oruc

A. Yavuz Oruc writes about technical and literary subjects with the same passion. Trained as an electrical engineer, he draws a parallel between writing lasting novels and building durable systems. He thinks that both require creativity and attention to detail. His Turkish novel İkinci Peron and its English edition Tomris is a case in point. The book is a historical fiction that sheds light to the early years of the Republic of Turkey by telling us the compelling story of a family struggling to cope with the irreversible transformation from the old to the new. A young girl is torn between the ideals of the new republic and the cultural and traditional values of her family, and struggles to make a life for herself. Historical nature of the story gives the novel its longevity while its breathtaking love story between two teachers of different ethnic origins that is cast in the impeccable landscape of Anatolia in a poetic and philosophical prose displays its creativity and attention to detail, and is a must read for anyone who appreciates a first class literary work.

Oruc holds a Ph.D. in electrical engineering and is a full professor at the University of Maryland, College Park, Maryland.
