Dylan Higgins is a Husband, Father, Pastor & Teacher.

My childhood was filled with wonder. In my early years of life I lived in a Confederate Army headquarters full of secret compartments used for hiding maps and guns. If walls could talk, right? My more formative years were spent in a old family farm house, built in the early 1920's. By all accounts this house was haunted by...something - shadowy spirits or memories - none of us were certain. In a sense the walls of this house did talk! In the environs of my youth my imagination thrived. I was influenced even further by a grandfather who told wonderful (and sometimes scary!) tales and a father immersed in folk music and astronomy. Some of my fondest memories are of my parents taking me to see fantastical movies like The Empire Strikes Back, The Dark Crystal and The Never Ending Story. While inspired by these epic films, I attribute much of my love for literature and writing to my mother. Being home-schooled (unschooled, actually - you should research it!) for part of my childhood, I was allowed to read the books I wanted to read before the ones I had to read. Oftentimes I was encouraged to re-write the endings in the manner that I’d have liked them to end. My first love was Science Fiction but later I developed a taste for Fantasy. I wish I could say that I was one of those kids who read The Chronicles of Narnia and the The Hobbit as a child, but my fascination with both Lewis and Tolkien came in adulthood. My wife and I discovered these and other inspiring authors as we read aloud - often late into the night - captivated by their brilliant tales.

My earliest experience with writing was poetic and lyrical, writing for the bands that I have been a part of over the last twenty years. In 2009 I decided to continue developing this craft by creating a children's picture book, that became a novel, that became a series called The Emblem & The Lantern. But really the whole idea began as a bedtime story I told to my children who were (and still remain) the hero and heroine of the tale.

The Emblem & The Lantern is now read and taught at several schools in Georgia.
