David Martin

I was born and raised on the Olympic Peninsula of Washington State along the Puget Sound region of the Salish Sea. Growing up immersed in the Pacific Northwest's sea-side forests gave me a strong affinity for the beauty and naturalness of my surroundings. An influence that lends itself well to my interpretation on life.

My poetic and politics reflect the influences of Emerson, Thoreau, Walt Whitman, Gary Snyder and the American traditions of transcendentalism and environmentalism. The poet, singer and mountaineer Mike Parker has said ""Thoreau, Cid Corman, Lorine Niedecker, Whalen & Snyder, Sam Hamill and now David Martin, a wilderness walker returning as the missing lynx in the lineage of nature based poetry heartbeating it's way into our gorges & forests-" placing me in a direct literary lineage of nature based writers.

Much of my recent poems are often short, spare and spiritual American haiku or undeniably earthy poems often exhibiting fertile and spiritual energies entwined, wrapped in the wonder of the natural world.

My work and poetry celebrates the connection to, and a reverence for, the complex and intricate beauty of the natural world from the perspective of an embedded and informed Human consciousness.

I have endeavored to live in, enjoy and explore Nature my entire life, so yes, it has a large place in my writing. Despite its content heavily constituted with natural imagery or relationship motifs, I would consider Human Ecology to be a most encompassing genre within which my poetry fits best.

I am interested in the connections I find in the outer manifestations of Nature to my inner world and understanding of my place in it. My poetry is quite often born of ontological musings during hikes or after them when enjoying a porter on the deck overlooking the creek.

I understand myself and my path of heart best in light of Spiritual Humanism as an Artist of Life following a mystic's path of heart and a spiritual warriors code. I am a proponent of deep ecology and hope to contribute to humanity's expansion deeper and outward into understanding of it's place in space and time. I am a father of two amazing children and have made Colorado my home since 1995. I live in Beulah, Colorado with my Soul-Mate wife.

I have a blog, An Illuminated Path of Heart, that you can subscribe to and receive new poetry almost weekly.
